Mini Medics in the Making: Next Generation First Aiders

We recently taught our youngest group of First Aid Training participants…..3 to 5 year olds!

Admittedly, the prospect of teaching children this young was a little daunting – they all looked so tiny and delicate. However, the youngsters from a Nottinghamshire Primary and Nursery school excelled in every way proving that you’re never too young (or old) to learn First Aid.

Based loosely on our Mini Medics Programme, we spent no more than 30 minutes with each group. There were three groups; F1 comprising the 3-4 year olds and two further groups of F2’s aged 4-5 years old.

They embraced the session with excitement and gusto – we couldn’t believe how many questions they had for us. Although many questions were in fact anecdotes on how they fell over and bumped their heads through to ‘my Daddy’s got man flu’!! We made the session very interactive with the children particularly enjoying rolling their teacher into the recovery position (and each other), our 999 emergency call enactment, and Trainer Chris Simmons demonstrating the difference between staying calm in an emergency and acting hysterically – this was met with raucous laughter from all!

By the end of the tuition each group understood what first aid was, where to find the nearest first aid kit in their classroom, calling 999, reporting incidents to ‘grown ups’, how to put someone in the recovery position and stemming the flow of blood from a cut.

We enjoyed every minute working with these little Mini Medics.
